Drivers of black cars beware

Media reports suggest that car insurance for young drivers is more expensive because of risky driving habits associated with inexperienced motorists, but new research from elephant.co.uk suggests that certain car colours may have something to do with speeding convictions.

The car insurance provider's poll revealed that 25.4% of the drivers of black cars had received speeding convictions and were nine per cent more likely to be carrying speeding penalty points on their licence.

If you drive a grey car you are likely to be the next most likely to speed as 25.1% of grey-car owners had speeding convictions.

Based on data collected from 1.7 million drivers, the analysis showed that drivers of silver, blue and brown cars were the next most likely to have speeding convictions.

Drivers of purple cars were shown to be the least likely to have a speeding conviction, while drivers of white, red and yellow cars were also shown to be more likely to drive within the speed limits.

The managing director of elephant.co.uk said that they wanted to know whether speeding convictions of those driving black and grey cars correlated with more powerful engines, but this was unproven.

He said, "Evidently for drivers of [black and grey] cars, the temptation to break the speed limit is simply too great whatever the engine size is.

A Hoot spokesperson said, "Buyers of car insurance for young drivers should remember that a car cover quote will take driving history as one of the most pertinent criteria for the price of a premium, so building up a strong no-claims bonus and keeping a clean licence are really important."
