Car insurance and drug driving

A new campaign warning of the risks of drug-driving is being launched as part of the Department for Transport's (DfT) THINK! road safety campaign. Prosecution for such a motoring offence will also see a steep rise in the cost of car insurance for young drivers

The £2.3 million campaign will be led by a TV advert warning drivers that the involuntary signs of drug use are visible to police who will stop the vehicle if they believe the driver might be under the influence.

DfT research has revealed that one in ten young male drivers admit to having driven after taking drugs.

The penalty for a drug-driving conviction could be as much as a six-month prison sentence and a £5,000 fine.

A spokesperson for Hoot, specialist providers of car insurance for young drivers, said, "Driving after taking drugs risks so much; your life, your friends' lives and the ability to get cheap car insurance for young drivers will also be negated."
