If car insurance for young drivers is expensive it could be because first car expectations are higher than they used to be.
The parents of today's young drivers often had to put up with old bangers for their first car, often bought with first wage packets and costing considerably less than today's first cars, even when adjustments for inflation are made.
Today, more than 66 percent of the car owners questioned demanded a higher quality vehicle such as a Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa or Renault Clio, with an average price of £2,470, as their first time purchase.
The research, by Tescocompare.com, suggests that 68 percent of young drivers are driving their own vehicle, by the time they are 19. That's an average of six years sooner than their parents.
Of the 2,078 young drivers polled, 35 percent had received their first car free of charge from their parents - usually as a gift - and the average length of time the young drivers kept this first car, before upgrading, was two years.
Interestingly, one in ten (11 percent) were already driving large family saloons like the Renault Laguna or Ford Mondeo, and it is drivers of the bigger more powerful cars who will pay the most for their car insurance for young drivers.
