Young drivers need more time on the road

When a driver passes their driving test they get their full licence, then their car insurance for young drivers, they throw away their L plates and begin a lifetime of motoring. That's all well and good for the future, but a UK car insurance provider has revealed a report stating that many new drivers are unlikely to have enough road experience to make them competent drivers.

The average young driver hits the roads after passing their test with 29.9 hours of driving experience, yet the Driving Standards Agency recommends 45 hours with an instructor and an extra 22 hours of private experience behind the wheel.

One in ten young drivers who had passed their driving test said that they did not feel they should have passed their test as they did not feel experienced enough to be driving alone on UK roads.

And it is parents who are believed to be the key in this issue as it is recommended that they spend more time accompanying their children as they gain road experience in the family car.

Young drivers are advised to get as much experience as possible in varying driving conditions, such as wind and rain and even night driving. And parents are also encouraged to give as much local driving knowledge as possible, such as tricky junctions, blind bends and any other road hazards which they may be aware of.

Of course, when a learner is driving the family car parents must make sure that appropriate car insurance for young drivers is in place and the most economical way of doing this is by having the child put on their policy as a named driver.

However, when the young driver passes their test and starts driving their own vehicle a new young driver's car insurance policy will have to be bought where the new driver is named as the main driver.
