Customers purchasing car insurance for young drivers have been warned not to be too tempted by programmes such as "Pimp my Ride".
Financial advice company Only Finance.com warned recently that many car owners are upgrading their vehicle with expensive paint jobs and performance enhancing engine equipment without considering how this will affect the insurance value of their car.
Expensive accessories may well not be covered under terms of an existing motor insurance policy and owners who "pimp" their cars may well find that if a theft occurs, expensive items may well be unrecoverable.
When a driver wishes to make any addition or modification to their car they should consult the car insurance company before going ahead.
A spokesperson for Hoot, who provide specialist car insurance for young drivers, said, " Whilst we appreciate the fun involved in customising a car, it is not much fun for the owner when they find they cannot claim for an expensive addition to the car that they did not inform the car insurance company about."
