Police in Northampton will be helping safeguard car insurance for young drivers over the Christmas months as they target young motorists in a high-profile campaign to dissuade drivers from drink-driving.
The county force has drafted in the help of the infamous nodding car insurance dog to try and get the message across that driving under the influence of drink and drugs will not be tolerated.
The dog, who is appearing in a pantomime at the Royal & Derngate in Northampton, met PC Steve Harris at the theatre yesterday to help launch the five week campaign.
While the anti-drink-drive message was being promoted in a fun way, the underlying message was serious.
PC Harris reminded drivers that a drink-drive arrest can also invalidate an insurance policy, making it a problem for the wider motoring community, not just the police.
He commented, "While the nodding dog may be a fun thing, there is a serious message."
Young drivers are specifically being targeted as there are a disproportionately high number of them in accident statistics. It is partly because of this that car insurance for young drivers is more expensive than for any other age range.
