Soaring claims for pothole damage to cars

Car insurance for young drivers may be taking a whack at the moment as claims for pothole damage this year have soared, trebling numbers of applications to insurers compared to 2008.

Road surfaces, especially local carriageways, have been crumbling across the country as a result of the freezing and snowy conditions of this year's winter.

Motoring organisation, the AA, has complained that British roads are currently in a generally poor condition and pothole repairs merely mask underlying weaknesses in the nation's road fabric.

Edmund King, the AA president, said, "Ultimately we will all pay more through having to once again patch and mend, and then pay out compensation."

About 700 drivers claimed off their motor insurance for pothole damage to vehicles last February. The figure has soared to some 2000 claims for the same month this year - and this is likely to impact the future cost of car insurance for young drivers, as well as older motorists.
