Statistics have proved that inexperienced motorists are more likely to take risks when driving than older car owners and this is why car insurance for young drivers is more expensive.
Not wearing a seat belt is a common dangerous driving behaviour, as is distracted driving, and a young man from East Lancashire may well have been committing both offences when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed recently.
The 21-year-old driver died of his car crash injuries the next day and at the inquest an eyewitness told the hearing that the young driver may well have been reaching into the backseat area of the vehicle as the car sped out of control and slid around a bend.
When the car came to a halt the other driver found the young man slumped across the passenger seat with loud music blasting from the car's stereo.
The coroner heard that although the day was cold, the driving conditions were good and post-mortem tests showed that the young driver did not have any substances in his system that would have affected his driving ability.
A police accident investigator said that the bend in the road where the car accident occurred was fairly shallow and it did not appear that high speed had contributed to the loss of control. However, he confirmed that the deceased driver did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt.
A spokesperson for Hoot, specialist providers of car insurance for young drivers, commented "This appears to be a tragic case. Using all safety measures at your disposal is always a good idea and it is not an urban myth - wearing a seat belt really can save your life."
