Uninsured majority are young drivers

A new investigation by the Motor Insurer's Bureau has discovered that one in five young motorists are driving without car insurance for young drivers. This equates to around 250,000 drivers in the 17-20 age band that aren't covered on the roads.

The investigation also found that a shocking number of young car owners aren't aware that driving without insurance is actually a criminal offence. However even if you have not been involved in a car accident, your vehicle could still be seized by police and even scrapped if you get caught.

Young people interviewed on Radio 1's newsbeat concerning their lack of young driver's insurance said they knew it was wrong but couldn't afford to pay for the high premiums that come with their age group.

However with one in five newly qualified drivers having an accident in their first year of driving, going without insurance can get you in trouble financially as well as with the law. Schemes such as Pass Plus can help reduce premiums as can having an experienced driver such as a parent down as a second driver on your car insurance policy.

It is essential however that you are properly covered on your insurance, if you are the owner and main user of your car, you must be down as the main named driver. With such serious consequences at stake for inadequate insurance, it is important that young drivers consider the long term cost of driving uninsured rather than the short term benefits. With specialised car insurance for young drivers available, insuring your car needn't be that expensive.
