Young and old drivers face higher quotes in villages
Car insurance for young drivers in the English county of Sussex may not be as cheap as many might prefer, new research has shown.
According to the study of insurance quotes over the past 10 months - approximately 10 million - the three places that car owners were more likely to make a claim for theft tended to be relatively small places.
Top of the list for theft claims was Winchelsea in East Sussex. In second place was Saltburn, a small North Yorkshire seaside resort. Third place falls to Godstone, a Surrey village.
Surprisingly, cities were not in the top five - smaller, more rural villages claimed the top spots. However, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester did feature in the top 20.
Moneysupermarket.com carried out the survey and expectations that crime figures would be higher for urban areas were proven wrong, whether for thefts from vehicles or the vehicle itself.
A spokesman for the price comparison site said, "It goes without saying that valuable items, be it mobile phones, sat navs or stereo equipment should not be left on display."
He suggested improving security to protect vehicles by purchasing a steering wheel lock or fitting an alarm. And keeping cars off the road or in a garage, especially at night, reduces the risk of thefts - and helps keep down the cost of cheap car insurance.
Insurance companies offer discounts for such measures - sometimes as high as 10 per cent - to help drive down the cost of car insurance for young drivers, as well as for older motorists.
