Car insurance woes for US teenager in Indianapolis

An American teenager will have trouble getting car insurance for young drivers after a crazy afternoon's driving antics that saw him cause over $40,000 of damage to a property in Indianapolis.

The young driver was spotted by firefighters whilst attempting to refuel his car in a petrol station. However, according to eyewitnesses, he was unable to stand straight or pump the fuel.

As the teen driver sped off, police were alerted and the fire truck followed at a safe distance fearing the worst from the situation.

Needless to say, the driver lost control of his vehicle; he hit a parked car in a driveway, careered through the local neighbourhood, demolished a fence and finally came to rest after smashing into the corner of a house. The damaged house was left in a near state of collapse and required shoring up once the crashed vehicle was removed.

The driver attempted to flee the scene, but when apprehended admitted readily to driving while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, as well as having taken prescription drugs. Police say he had taken the car from his girlfriend without her permission.

The young driver faces preliminary charges of leaving the scene of a car accident, operating a car while intoxicated and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The report does not say whether he possessed valid car insurance for young drivers; if not, this would be another charge to add to the list.
