Australian speeding habits may affect car insurance for young driversAustralian police have reported a worrying trend for driving at high speeds among the young, which could not only prove dangerous to those committing the speeding offences, but could also raise the cost of car insurance for young drivers as a group. Eight drivers under the age of 25 were stopped during the New Year period for travelling at more than 45 kilometres per hour - almost 30 miles per hour - over the speed limit. One was stopped travelling at almost 200 kilometres per hour (over 120 miles per hour), almost twice the legal speed limit. Any incident at this speed would be highly dangerous, and this driver's future motor insurance quotes are likely to reflect this by being higher than for other young drivers. A police spokesperson from South Australia said: "We have some young people, and they are young people involved in these offences, travelling way beyond the speed limit and way beyond the level of their ability. The last thing we need is to pick up the newspaper and read about another multiple fatality involving young people." Although UK roads offer less opportunity for speeding at this level than those in Australia, the Green Flag report into safe driving gives figures that suggest young drivers in Britain are also more likely to drive above the speed limit. This explains, in part, why even a cheap motor insurance company will offer a higher quote in their car insurance for young drivers.
