A recent day course run by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) aimed to show 17-25-year-olds that if they drive dangerously they are likely to lose much more than cheap car insurance for young drivers.
The event showed 30 young people the effects of dangerous driving by presenting a simulated road smash where they watched fire officers rescue an injured volunteer form a car wreck.
The young people were also able to take part in driving skill tests, simulations of drunk driving using 'beer goggles' and they witnessed the carnage of subsequent car accidents that can occur after drinking, by way of the mocked up road smash.
The day's activities included involvement from Northumbria Police, and local paper the Chronicle's Road Respect campaign helped to deliver various road safety messages.
The day was part of a 12-week Prince's Trust Programme, run by TWFRS to help young people gain all sorts of life skills.
Leader Stew Lamb said, "Many young people are at high risk of being injured or killed in a car accident but they don't think about this when they get in a car.
"We're sending them the message that by driving fast or carelessly, or under the influence of alcohol, they may kill or injure themselves or their friends.
"We attend around nine road traffic collisions a week in Tyne and Wear and in many cases, these accidents could have been prevented with a safe and responsible approach to driving."
A spokesperson for Hoot said, "Getting cheap car insurance for young drivers is only possible if you stay accident free. Choosing to drive responsibly in a smaller car can also help keep down the cost of your car insurance quote."
