Are you covered against the wrong type of fuel?

According to the Association of British Insurance, UK motorists with comprehensive car insurance should be covered, in principal, against accidental damage caused by refuelling their car with the wrong fuel.

Researchers from Auto Express magazine have estimated that 120,000 motorists manage to put the wrong fuel in their car each year and this leads to around £50 million in unwanted and very preventable repair bills.

The extent of damage done to your vehicle can be negligible, however, if you realise your mistake before driving your car. In this case a simple 'pump out' is all that is required.

If you have driven your car with the incorrect fuel the damage is a little more serious and you will need further repairs such as an engine flush and new filter. A Skoda Octavia driver could be charged as little as £110 for this procedure.

The magazine's research exposed some repairers charging for unnecessary work. The most expensive quote came from a Chrysler dealer, for a Grand Voyager, at a total cost of £5,000.

A spokesperson for Auto Express said, "Modern vehicles are much more resilient than many of the garages we spoke to would have us believe. This long list of inflated quotes smacks of profiteering."

The Association of British Insurers added that a car insurance company will often exclude accidental damage to a vehicle as a result of misfueling, especially if the motorist only has third party cover.

Drivers are therefore urged to check their car insurance details to see whether they are covered.
