Car insurance policies amended but motorists unaware

Before long the government and car insurance companies will be enforcing a road safety ruling which states that it is mandatory for all drivers to have breakdown cover insurance on their vehicles.

However, research by a leading vehicle breakdown company has shown that knowledge of this ruling is scarce.

The study has revealed that 59% of its members were unaware of the new measure, and out of 41% of the individuals who were aware of the new ruling 38% still did not understand the intricacies of the regulations.

The final legislation for the new ruling was set before Parliament on April 18 by the road safety minister. The ruling states that it will not only be a criminal offence to drive without an insurance policy, but also illegal to own a vehicle without having any breakdown car cover.

The director for a leading car insurance company has spoken about how this tough action, affecting car insurance, is not being given the attention it deserves.

He stated that it is vital for the government to step in and take action to increase the public's awareness of the new legislation. Failure to do so could result in the road safety legislation being ineffective.
