Security devices not factor in quote equations

Many UK drivers whose motor insurance policies are up for renewal will be disappointed to learn that the majority of providers still do not offer discounts to motorists who have specialist security measures fitted to their vehicles.

Around 90% of UK motor insurance companies still do not offer any form of premium incentive to people who have either electronic immobilisers or tracking devices installed in their vehicles.

In many ways it is a surprise that more providers don't take these devices into account when providing car insurance quotes as it has been shown that they make a vehicle 70% less likely to become a target for thieves.

The managing director of one online car insurance company offers some explanation for this phenomenon, saying, "The car insurance market has never been so competitive for providers."

"It isn't the most profitable line of insurance, as more than one in six private car drivers make a claim each year which equates to £18.7m paid out in claims every day. This leaves insurers in a cut-throat business."
