Prehistoric genes are causing young men drivers to be prone to road rage and take risks, according to evidence in a top-level car insurance report presented to UK ministers.
Male motorists drive as aggressively as when homes were caves, according to a UK parliamentary transport report by Geoffrey Beattie, a leading psychologist at Manchester University.
Boy racer-style driving and bad habits hark back to genes developed from the stone age and cavemen era that are inappropriate for motoring on 21st century roads, the report claims.
Techniques learnt by cavemen - where showing off, danger, speed and risks were perhaps part of the primitive culture - are visible in how modern man drives today, said Prof Beattie.
Aggression, hunting skills and risks used in times past appear to be 'hard-wired' into modern man - but to the detriment of more peace-loving road users.
Facts show men are more prone to road traffic accidents, pushing up cost of cheap car insurance especially for young drivers.
The report highlights the need for males to overcome natural instincts that were more useful to help him to survive and find female mates in dim and distant times - but not now.
Cheap motor insurance companies are publicising the report - called Sex Differences in Driving and Insurance Risk - to work to reduce deaths and injury by focusing on making UK roads safer, and in a bid to keep car insurance costs as low as possible.
