Car insurance, young drivers and speed cameras could lead to a more rewarding mix after a new survey has revealed that millions would be more likely to stick to speed limits if offered incentives.
A YouGov poll found that almost half of drivers would support proposals that led to speed cameras rewarding motorists who do not break speed limits.
According to the survey, 48 per cent were in favour of the idea. Perhaps surprisingly 44 per cent were opposed, although no reasons were given for them being against such a scheme.
Some nine per cent were uncertain about whether to back or oppose the suggested scheme, even though the proposal suggested drivers should be rewarded with money payments or council tax discounts.
Car insurance firm Swinton commissioned the survey. It believed redistributing revenue collected via the speed camera network would help reduce speeding.
Swinton's Steve Chelton said, 'If drivers knew that speed cameras were calibrated to randomly flash the occasional good driver, motorists would be much more likely to adhere to speed limits."
He suggested motorists caught keeping to the speed limit - by randomly flashing good drivers, young and old - should be sent congratulatory letters containing council tax money-off vouchers or cheques for, say, £30.
As a result, there would be a helpful impact on cheap car insurance, young drivers and more experienced motorists, with less speeding tickets issued and cheaper car insurance rates likely.
