iPods and other portable music players are a danger to motorists and could lead to road accidents and a costly impact on car insurance, young people have been warned.
A relatively high number of minor car insurance claims - nine per cent - are being made by motorists who are caught in road shunts after having to brake hard to avoid people listening to mp3 music players.
Dubbed podestrians, these walkers are often the subject of near misses and crashes as motorists narrowly avoid running them down.
Reports submitted to insurance companies about incidents with podestrians reveal that some 62 per cent of those causing the problems are "kids", "young people" or "teenagers".
Music player and iPod users tend to be oblivious to the sound of approaching traffic because their players drown out the noise or their headphones cancel out background sounds.
One insurance firm has called for the Green Cross Code to be updated and changed so that as well as "looking and listening", it requires people to take off headphones and mobile listening electronic devices.
Podestrians have been termed a growing menace - and for car insurance, young drivers as well as old, need to take care to avoid being in accidents and affecting the cost of their cover.
