Car mods could cause havoc with motor insurance quotes

An online car insurance company is warning motorists that going overboard when personalising their car could hugely increase their motor insurance quotes.

BeatThatQuote.com has found that drivers who modify their cars could be sacrificing their cheap car insurance, as they could see rises of up to 171% in their premiums.

Common modifications such as body re-sprays, bull bars and non-standard alloys and the addition of a rear spoiler could see a motor insurance quote increase of around 30% for each mod.

Darkened windows add an extra 50% to premiums, whilst lowering the car's suspension could mean you pay 171% more for a motor insurance policy.

A spokesperson for BeatThatQuote.com said: "It's all very well for rock stars to add thousands of pounds worth of extras to their cars, but unless you're on a rock star salary, you could end up spending all your spare cash doing up your car and then find you can't afford to insure it.

"You may be safer opting to follow Leonardo di Caprio and drive an eco-friendly Toyota Prius instead."
