Mobile phone laws catch out driving instructor

A Falkirk driving instructor may struggle to find cheap car insurance after he was booked for using a mobile phone whilst supervising a student.

Under new, tougher laws on handheld mobile phone use introduced in February 2007, instructors can be fined and given penalty points even if they were not in the driving seat at the time.

"The new legislation has been brought in for a reason," said a police spokesman. "To use a mobile while teaching is irresponsible."

This was just one of 129 separate bookings for illegal phone use made in central Scotland in the past month - 61 of which were also in Falkirk. The police have warned motorists to expect 'relentless enforcement' of the new laws until such a time as the problem is brought under control.

"Now that there's a points penalty for talking on a mobile whilst in charge of a vehicle, convicted drivers - and instructors - will also see a big jump in the price of their motor insurance premiums," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot.
