Dig out your flat cap, the driving holiday is back

It is time to venture forth into Europe behind the wheel of your trusty motor car, according to new research - with cheap car insurance saving you enough to help pay for new computer games for kids in the back seat.

If the fiasco at Heathrow's Terminal Five earlier this year chilled you to the bone with thoughts of summer holidays ruined by long waits and lost baggage, then you might be one of the one-in-ten Brits, according to the study, who is planning to give flying a miss this year.

According to a new survey by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) 32 per cent of UK drivers are considering towing a caravan in the name of a "driving vacation" - and 27per cent said a camping trip could be the holiday of choice.

Travel experts at ABTA suggest it is our "greener" attitude to travel that may have prompted the resurgence of the family driving holiday. But, they are reminding the born-again flat cappers that there could be problems even though it's cheap - car insurance must provide adequate cover while driving abroad and you should check with your insurance company before travelling.
