Rural roads face new national 50 mph speed limit

Government proposals to reduce speed limits to 50 miles per hour on many UK roads is planned in a bid to cut deaths and injuries - and a spin off benefit is likely to be purchases of cheap car insurance.

Rural single-carriageway roads are being targeted. Up to 250 lives are expected to be saved with the initiative also being seen as eco-friendly by reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Media reports suggest more average speed cameras might be introduced to police the speed limit change which has been seen by some experts as being "potentially unpopular".

The AA (Automobile Association) was concerned local councils would impose blanket 50 mph limits when 60 mph would be more appropriate - which could lead to dangerous overtaking.

AA president Edmund King said, "Many crashes on rural roads happen not because the speed limit is too high but because reckless young drivers lose control."

More accidents occur on rural A-roads, according to statistics with 1603 people dying in 2007 compared to 1160 deaths on urban roads.

A reduction in accidents and road deaths is expected to feed through into cheaper car insurance costs, although drivers will need to watch their speed to avoid incurring points on their licences.
