Video gamers cause danger on the road

High-action, spectacular shoot 'em up computer video games are putting cheap car insurance at risk for thousands of young drivers, new research has revealed.

Devotees of Halo and games of that style on consoles such as Playstation and Xbox are found to have developed quick reactions - but their observation skills can be lacking.

According to an analysis of various studies, young motorists who are 'gamers' tend to fail to observe the road and associated hazards.

For example, when faced with an obstacle in the road, they tend to be over-confident and not alter their driving speed, causing potential danger by swerving at the last minute.

Time must be taken to monitor the road ahead. Intensive use of driving computer games such as Grand Theft Auto should be avoided while learning to drive, recommends the research.

Hoot, specialists in young driver car cover, is urging older teenagers and motorists in their 20s to not use their steering wheel as a games controller.

A spokesperson for Hoot said, "Once you crash on real roads, it's just like 'game over' with no 'Medal of Honour' and zero chance of starting again until the pick-up truck takes you away - and your cheap car insurance is likely to be badly hit at renewal time."
