The Italian Job managed to eclipse competition from other well-loved motoring films such as Bullit and Cannonball Run.
The famous crime film starring Michael Caine received far more votes from men than women. Female respondents were keener on Grease, a film from the early 1970s, starring John Trovolta and Olivia Newton-John.
Many of the women drivers who were questioned said that the greatest car movies featured a well-known actor.
However, men are of the opinion that a well crafted storyline, exciting car stunts and high speed car chases are the three most important elements of a top quality motoring film.
Novice drivers have been warned against attempting to emulate the high speed stunts seen on the big screen, unless they want to risk the invalidation of their student car insurance and do themselves a serious injury.
Young motorists may also be interested in going to see Cars 2 at their local cinema later this summer. The sequel to the highly successful animated movie will feature characters voiced by Owen Wilson and Michael Caine. It may prove particularly popular among young motorists with cheap car insurance.
