Finding cheap car insurance for young drivers is becoming increasingly difficult, according to findings by the BBC, with insurance premiums steering many new drivers off the road.
The typical cost of a quote is between approximately £2,000 and £3,000, yet a new driver being quoted up to £27,000 it is not unheard of.
The main reason behind these high prices is that many insurance companies do not want to cover young drivers between the ages of 17-20, as they are considered too high a risk.
Between the years 2004 to 2008, young drivers were responsible for 66 deaths in the UK and 439 serious injuries, as well as becoming casualties and fatalities themselves. Another reason attributed to the high prices is the lack of competition in the new driver car insurance sector.
The rising premium rates have given some families the idea of naming an adult as the main driver on the insurance, although the vehicle will actually be used primarily by a young driver. This process is known as fronting and is illegal, but insurance companies, and the police, say that it is on the rise.
Statistics show that almost a fifth of new drivers are involved in a collision during their first six months behind the wheel, so it might not come as a surprise to some motorists that insurance companies are unwilling to provide cheap car insurance for young drivers as they pose the highest risk.
However, by insuring with firms which cater specifically to young drivers, such as Hoot, they might be able to get the lower price cover they need to stay on top of their car's running costs.
