Young drivers looking for cheap car insurance have been warned to be wary of comparison websites by the consumer champion, Which?
Half a dozen of the most popular aggregator / comparison sites were checked and analysed. According to Which?, car insurance quotes often failed to clearly display excess charges.
Which.co.uk editor Jess Ross said, "Comparison sites sell themselves on having all the information in one place and being easy to use but we found that the way they display excess charges means it's difficult for people to make informed decisions."
Which? was critical about comparison sites purporting to be one-stop shops for insurance buyers. It pointed out that customers must still search different sites to find the best deals.
Problems highlighted in the survey:
Gocompare hit back, claiming the consumer group had "shot itself in the foot" by failing to understand the operation of comparison sites. The site was happy that customers could quickly decide appropriate cover, excess and premium levels.
"I'd suggest they stick to reviewing washing machines in the future," said a spokeswoman.
Motorists searching for the cheapest car insurance online via Comparethemarket comparison site were promised that an overhaul was pending to ensure best clarity of the excess and greater detail on policy prices.
