Young drivers easy prey for dodgy car repairs

When you have spent ages searching around for cheap car insurance, the last thing you want to do is spend all the savings you've made on expensive repair bills at your local garage, especially when you're not totally sure how legitimate they are.

A new study by Motor Codes, the automotive industry's self-regulatory body, found that one in five car owners surveyed have been charged more than the garage's original estimate.

A further 12% suspected they have been overcharged and 10% believed that non-existent problems had been invented to add to the bill.

Car owners also said they often felt confused by the motoring jargon used by mechanics and others were left unsure of what work had actually been carried out. This resulted in a third of car owners being left dissatisfied with work carried out on their cars.

Young drivers are more likely to be deceived by garages due to their inexperience and lack of confidence to question any repair work they're unsure about. After forking out on big young driver insurance premiums, expensive repair bills are the last thing that young motorists want.

A Hoot spokesperson gave this advice, "When getting your car serviced or MOTd, check that your garage is a subscriber to the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair. If you have any problems, contact Motor Codes and that way you can ensure your savings made finding cheap car insurance will not be wasted."
