GPs highlight fake injury claims

Cheap car insurance deals may be in jeopardy after a survey of UK doctors revealed that numbers of motorists faking compensation claims for injuries while driving has increased by 25 per cent since the recession started.

Most people who try to con insurance companies have been found to lodge false or fraudulent motor cover claims for whiplash.

Some 65 per cent of GPs said more people were trying to fake injuries now than a decade ago. And almost all doctors believed they had met with patients who were exaggerating injuries in attempts to be paid compensation.

The survey organisers, insurance company LV=, said some people seemed to think inventing injuries was a quick way to make money - but their actions were pushing up premium prices for everyone.

The insurer warned that cheap car insurance was affected because about 20 per cent of premium costs were now calculated to cover whiplash claims.
