Young drivers find it difficult to receive cheap car insurance because a minority of them take potentially fatal risks when they are behind the wheel of a vehicle, yet the Government last night refused to legislate in order to curtail their driving.
Specific proposals from the Association of British Insurers' (ABI) new campaign to improve road safety for youngsters are being ignored by the government, it appears.
The vast majority of youngsters say that they would support the introduction of tougher rules for new drivers on the roads, especially if they have recently passed their test.
However, the Government's road safety minister does not want to increase restrictions on young drivers, stating that he did not want to "unfairly penalise responsible young people who rely on driving to work or college."
It is no secret that car insurance for young drivers is the most costly because of the increased risks that some of them take on the road, yet the ABI feels that the higher cost of young driver cover does not improve safety or reduce accidents and further reforms are needed.
A spokesperson for the ABI stated, "Both this Government and its predecessor have talked a good game on young drivers but have failed to grasp real reform with the result that claims have continued to rise and costs of insurance for young drivers have become too high."
Cheap car insurance for young drivers could be the eventual outcome of the reforms, as motorists would be forced to be more careful and the restrictions would significantly lessen their chance of crashing their vehicle.
