Cheap young driver insurance rewarded to Pass Plus motorists

Flintshire County, in the north-east of Wales, could be seen as a prime example of why cheap young driver insurance is difficult to find in the UK.

It has been revealed that nearly half of the people killed as a result of car accidents in Flintshire were either young motorists or passengers. Between 2004 and 2008, of the 42 motorists killed while driving in the county, 22 were under the age of 25.

The reason these figures are particularly surprising, is that drivers under the age of 25 make up only one eighth of the driving population of that area.

Some road victims' parents believe that harsher penalties should be put into force to deter reckless drivers.

For example, a mother from Connah's Quay, whose teenage child was killed in a car crash, thought that the driver responsible should have been given a tougher sentence. The 18-year-old who caused the accident pleaded guilty to reckless driving but was only banned from driving for a year, given 100 hours community service, and made to re-sit the driving exam which he had passed only a few months previously.

The mother suggested that drivers responsible for traffic fatalities should spend time with their victim's family in order to see the devastating consequence of their actions.

The council has defended itself saying that it has already taken steps to reduce the number of road accidents involving young motorists, by, for example, promoting Pass Plus which is available to all drivers who have a full licence.

The head of transport in Flintshire says the course deals with issues such as road collisions, driving techniques and hazard perception. Successful completion of the course could also lead to cheap young driver insurance as discounts are sometimes offered on premiums as a result.
