Young drivers who opt against purchasing student car insurance may soon have their vehicles clamped, confiscated and destroyed.
Under regulations proposed by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning it will be illegal to be the registered owner of an uninsured car, even if it never leaves your own garage. At present it is only an offence to drive an uninsured vehicle.
People who take the risk of hitting the road without young persons car insurance are to be informed of their responsibilities and asked to invest in a policy at the earliest possible opportunity. They may also be given a fine.
A Department for Transport spokesperson said, "The regulations will allow the DVLA to take action against those who ignore warnings to get their vehicle insured.
"Motorists will receive a letter telling them their vehicle appears to be uninsured and warning them they will be fined unless they take action."
A representative of the AA, said, "There must be some flexibility or leniency, otherwise this will become just another scam, like some cowboy parking ticket or clamping operations. It must not become a money spinner."
Inexperienced motorists who are reluctant to pay out for student car insurance may be interested to hear that vehicles with a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) don't have to be insured.
