Environmental action urged to reduce premiums

Conservationists and insurance quote experts are warning UK car insurance and home insurance customers that if they want to reduce the cost of their premiums they should do more to ensure they keep their gardens green.

They also advised all UK car insurance and home insurance policy holders that they should seek to ensure they are all covered in the even of any winter flooding.

In 2007 many home insurance and motor insurance customers found to their cost that insufficient cover for flooding can burn a significant hole in the pocket. Even after a £115 million cash injection from an EU flooding fund, many people affected by the UK's 2007 floods will still find themselves struggling to return to their pre-flood financial positions.

Paul Moorshead, from consultancy EMB, believes a failure to address core environmental issues could lead to the cost of UK car insurance and home insurance premiums spiralling, "The main action people can take is to encourage more public spending on flood defences and more building of houses in areas that are not at risk of flooding.

"In recent years, the insurance industry has clearly stated that more money needs to be spent on flood defences or the risk will rise - and naturally so will premiums."

Martin Doughty, chair of Natural England, implied that one way consumers could act to reduce the potential cost of UK car insurance and home insurance quotes would be to return their gardens to nature, "The gardens of England are under threat. In London, front gardens with an area 22 times the size of Hyde Park are now paved over and lost, reducing havens for wildlife, increasing the impact of flash flooding and contributing to climate change."
