Insurer defends stance

Tesco has come in for considerable public criticism after it was revealed that the retail and insurance giant refuses to offer young drivers insurance to motorists in the L8 postcode of Liverpool, which will soon be the site of huge Tesco store.

When it was announced that the retailer would be opening a store in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Tesco made claims about the way it would involve itself in the L8 community.

However, after it was announced that the company refused to provide car insurance quotes to residents because of various "risk factors" a number of councillors and residents have accused the supermarket giant of being two-faced.

One councillor commented, "The firm talks about consideration for the community, but this is hypocrisy of the highest order.

"I do not suppose it is worse than anyone else, but because it is the biggest I think it probably makes the most mistakes."

A spokesperson from the company attempted to explain why it does not offer young drivers insurance cover to L8 residents. "Due to a combination of risk factors, which includes the recent motor claims history, Tesco Car Insurance currently do not provide a direct quote for the L8 postcode," he said.

However, he said that residents may be able to obtain a cover by making a comparison of quotes online.
