A major clampdown on motorists who drive without car insurance has been announced by the government for the year 2010 after it was criticised by UK insurance body, Biba, for delays taking action.
By that time, it is planned that police forces across the country will be able to check Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) records against insurance industry databases and pinpoint cars that are apparently uninsured.
With about 6% of UK cars - approximately two million - estimated to be uninsured, a new offence of keeping an uninsured car is being created.
Owners of vehicles identified as uninsured would receive a warning letter as part of the crackdown. Failing to take out insurance would lead to a £100 fine and their vehicle could be seized or crushed.
In preparation for this change in the law, the government is planning a publicity campaign including thousands of letters being sent out to uninsured motorists recommending they contact their insurance company.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) is backing this approach to ensure motor insurance customers comply with the law.
Pleased with the initiative's progress, Biba executive Graeme Trudgill said, "It has been a successful campaign."
Research shows that motorists who drive without car insurance are up to ten times more likely to face convictions for drink-driving, driving an unsafe car and driving without due care and attention.
