If you're an exotic, large or well-loved animal, now really is the time to play a spot of 'chicken' on our nation's trunk roads.
Last week, we heard the story of Suki the foal, who strayed onto the M66 near Manchester and had to be rescued by police. Then an unnamed bull got loose on Devon's A30 (he was shot rather than rescued).
Fortunately, the latest animal jaywalker was taken alive after flirting with death on the A3 in Surrey.
The as-yet nameless bird was spotted by startled motorists hopping from lane to lane across the carriageway. With no regard for its own safety, the creature kept landing in the path of oncoming cars, forcing them to swerve out of the way.
Police arrived at the scene, just outside Cobham, after a total of 22 emergency calls were made regarding an "exotic-looking" bird on the road.
It was a crested crane; a rare sight in this country but easily identified by its distinctive plumage. The bird was apprehended after a ten-minute chase when one of the resourceful bobbies lassoed it with his police jacket.
"I'm glad the crane was okay," said Mike Page, who admits he spends more time studying car insurance for young drivers than ornithology, "but the whole straying onto the road thing is really passé as far as I'm concerned.
"I'm continually surprised none of these stories ends up with claims being made against car insurance for young drivers, or motor insurance of any kind," he added.
