A study by a motor insurance comparison website has revealed that citizens of Wigan display more nous when it comes to buying cover than people from any other part of the country. However, what the study does not reveal is whether those from Wigan are getting the cheapest deals – instead, all it does is show that they are more likely to scour the market, looking at the respective benefits of things like curfew car insurance and low mileage cover.
Comparison website Compare the Market found that citizens from Bolton came second on its "savviness rating", with Swansea, Oldham and Middlesbrough rounding out the top five.
Despite this, the survey did not reveal anything about the types of policy bought by Britain's "savvy" insurance customers, although it is thought that many of the biggest savers may have bought innovative cover such as curfew car insurance.
A spokesperson from the website commented, "Although towns and cities in the northwest featured heavily in the top ten it is clear that use of price comparison for insurance is now widespread right across the UK.
"Just a few years ago, the idea of using the internet to compare quotes and select the best product was simply that: an idea. Now it is the main route for consumers searching for the right product and price for them. Price comparison websites have redefined the way people buy insurance products."
While a spokesperson from young driver insurance specialist Hoot comments, "It is true that comparison websites have redefined the way that people buy their cover, but it is also true that the products themselves have been redefined.
"Nowadays, its possible to buy, low mileage, restricted hours or curfew car insurance, very much depending on the needs of the consumer."
