Drink driver cleared after ex-wife admits spiking

A Welsh father has hung onto his cheap car insurance policy despite owning-up to drink driving with his three children in the car.

The 43-year-old was found to be over the limit when police officers stopped him on the way home from a family party. He had knowingly drunk two pints that evening and had considered himself safe to drive, but the breathalyser results showed he'd consumed considerably more alcohol.

The truth came out in court, when his ex-wife confessed she'd spiked his drinks with vodka and then called the police to report him for drink-driving.

The man, who was given an absolute discharge, left court with his name cleared and his cheap car insurance premium intact. His ex, who admitted what she'd done was "stupid", was not charged.

"What a terrible risk the ex-wife took," said Mike Page, spokesman for the online car insurance specialists at Hoot. "The dink-driving episode could easily have ended with a fatal accident."
