There has been a 24% increase in the number of motorcyclists on the road this spring as drivers try and battle the growing costs of motoring. High student car insurance costs coupled with the rising fuel prices may convince more and more younger drivers to turn to two wheels in a bid to save a few pounds.
According to research by the Post Office, this trend may well continue as over 4million car owners said they would be prepared to switch their car for a motorcycle to save money on fuel bills.
Motorcyclists pay around £15 for road tax while owners of cars in the highest tax brackets can pay up to £405 for a years worth of tax. Motorcyclists also enjoy 100mpg fuel efficiency, cheaper insurance and free parking for scooters and smaller motorcycles.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said that motorcycles "make good environmental sense" due to their fuel efficiency and the cheaper insurance deals available for them.
A Hoot spokesperson said, "With such great deals available on student car insurance, young drivers don't need to switch to motorcycles to save money".
