Reducing the impact of winter weather

With winter fast approaching Confused.com has come up with some top tips for minimising the impact which snow and ice can have on motors covered by car insurance for young drivers.

It is always sensible to ensure that car batteries are regularly charged. Individuals with student car insurance should remember that batteries require more energy during the winter, because they generate power for lights and heaters.

Vehicle batteries do not usually last longer than five years. When this period is over motorists should search for a replacement, instead of running the risk of breaking down when the weather is bitter.

Drivers are also encouraged to top up the windscreen washer fluid after lengthy journeys. A good spray of anti-freeze will prevent windscreens being completely iced over.

Will Thomas, Head of Motor Insurance at the price comparison website, said, "Motorists need to plan their journeys in advance. Leaving home ten minutes earlier, in order to de-ice the windscreen, will save that potentially dangerous mad rush to work."

People often end up in accidents because they haven't carried out simple checks of their vehicles. Apart from being hit with penalty points these motorists could also see their car insurance for young drivers premiums shoot up.
