Young driver insurance may be more difficult for a 19-year-old Cambridgeshire woman to obtain despite passing her driving test at the third attempt.
The student arrived home after her success and parked her Renault Clio on the verge but an hour later a council grass cutting machine being used near the house bumped into a concrete lamppost and it crashed down onto her car.
It suffered damage to the roof and rear window as well as scratches to the body as a result of the lighting column falling across it. With the cost of repairing the damage outweighing the £900 value of the car, the Clio will be written off by the woman's insurance company.
She told the Cambridge News she was particularly angry because she had saved hard to pay for the car and it had just passed its MOT test.
The local authority is expected to ask the mowing contractor to pay for the replacement of the street light but it is not known if the firm will also pay compensation to the driver or how the incident will affect her future young driver insurance.
