Chewing gum helps young drivers and car insurance
When it comes to cheaper young drivers car insurance, new research has revealed that chewing gum really does appear to improve motorists' driving standards.
Driver training school BSM (British School of Motoring) prepared studies to test concentration levels among learner drivers. The experiment recorded driving skill levels when chewing and not chewing gum by measuring numbers of mistakes.
When chewing, the study found that learner drivers were 91% more likely to not make a mistake - they correctly observed hazards in the road. In addition, steering was better for 85% when they were chewing.
Many of the learner drivers also knew their driving was better when chewing - about two thirds said they were able to better concentrate as they chewed.
The experiment tested 36 learner drivers. Most noticeable was hazard perception - drivers made just one mistake while chewing gum but a mighty 11 when not chewing. During a steering test, they made only six mistakes while gum was in the mouth compared to 40 when not chewing.
Some 44 per cent of learners tended not to speed when chewing. A series of ten hazards that learner drivers need to pass in driving tests were monitored. They included hitting kerbs, lane discipline, mirror checks, using indicators and traffic light jumping,
The Wrigley-sponsored study apparently proved that to drive more safely - and subsequently expect to benefit from cheaper young drivers car insurance quotes - learners chewing gum are statistically less likely to make mistakes on the road.
