Young boy posing as bus driver does it "better than most"

It would be wrong to describe 15-year-old auto thief Ritchie Calvin Davis as a joyrider, despite his having driven 12 miles in a stolen Florida public bus.

That's because Davis is widely acknowledged to have done a better job on the Orlando stopping service than regular bus staff.

He followed the prescribed bus route, making all the scheduled stops and charging correct fares from his passengers.

In short, Davis drove like a pro.

He was only rumbled when one passenger, concerned by how young he looked, called the cops to check he wasn't an under-age bus company employee.

"I drove that bus better than most of the usual drivers," he told police. "There isn't a scratch on it. I know how to start it, drive it, lower it, raise it."

He has been charged with grand theft auto and driving without a valid licence or motor insurance. Judges are expected to throw the book at Davis as he has a previous conviction - for hijacking a tour bus full of sightseers.

"Sounds like it'll be a real loss for the US transport industry if Davis doesn't pursue a career in bus driving," said Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot.

"Young driver car insurance isn't going to be cheap given his convictions," he added, "but I'm sure the right employer will be able to see his potential."
