Tougher driving tests planned

Ministers are planning to force young drivers to undertake tougher testing to improve their motoring skills - and hopefully help cut the cost of car insurance for learner drivers.

The Government is issuing a consultation paper about the proposal this week after scrapping ideas such as bans on carrying passengers and setting alcohol limits at a lower level than those for older motorists.

Hitting all young and learner drivers for poor driving demonstrated by a mainly male minority was wrong, ministers had decided - although they agree some action must be taken to reduce the youth death toll on UK roads.

Members of Parliament (MPs) want to see training periods made longer with new testing added for parking, night and motorway driving.

Alarming figures show risk of death for young male drivers is 1000 per cent, or 10 times, higher than middle aged gents (40 to 59 years old) - which has highlighted the rising cost of young driver car insurance.

Cathy Keeler, from road safety campaigning group Brake said: "It would be a huge mistake not to have post (-test) restrictions because there is compelling evidence that they save lives."

Figures in the Daily Mail newspaper show the cost of learning to drive is set to rise from an average £900 to a whopping £1500. Car insurance for learner drivers also seems to be rising continually.

Digg!
