Elderly lady crashes without the assistance of young drivers

There's no getting away from the fact that young drivers are responsible for more crashes than any other age-group. That's why finding cheap car insurance for young drivers can be such a nightmare.

That's also why road safety group Brake has declared 'Young Drivers' the theme of this year's Road Safety Week (6-12 Nov 2006).

But it isn't all our fault. Sure, the majority of RTAs involve under-30s - but there's still plenty of grannies out there flipping Toyota Starlets at petrol stations.

Take 82-year-old Suzanne Cordeau for instance, who flipped her Toyota Starlet at a petrol station in Tewkesbury, demolishing a diesel pump in the process.

Ms Cordeau's aged impetuosity might have turned the forecourt in to a raging inferno had it not been for the quick-thinking of station manager Lloyd Ward.

Mr Ward, a reassuringly middle-aged 46, flipped the emergency cut-off switch before any of the deadly-flammable diesel could escape.

It took 12 firefighters to remove Cordeau from the twisted wreck of her car, though she received only minor bruising in the crash.

"I have driven all my life and I've never had an accident before," she protested. "This is all very embarrassing."

38-year-old Mike Page, Hoot spokesman and an expert on car insurance for young drivers, said "I think the chaps at Saga motor insurance might have some bad news for Ms Cordeau.

"Let's hope she has plenty of cat food and sherry laid down already - or it's going to be a lean winter this year chez Cordeau," he added.
