Drivers in the 17-22 age bracket are having to pay 50% more for motor cover than they were 12 months ago, according to the AA, although restricted hours car insurance may not have been affected by this rise.
The significant increase is thought to be a consequence of a rise in the number of claims for injuries sustained during crashes.
Teenaged men have been severely impacted by the rising price of car insurance for new drivers. The average price which young male drivers are quoted is a considerable £2,457. Inexperienced female drivers fare far better, often receiving a quote of a little more than £1,000.
Simon Douglas, Director of Insurance at the AA, said, "If you have an accident which leaves someone disabled, the claim can be up to £15m.
"And young men are twice as likely to be involved in these incidents than young women."
Newly qualified motorists who are desperate to cruise the roads are advised to take an advanced driving course, or invest in a cheap vehicle with a small engine. These are tried and tested methods of keeping the costs of insurance to a minimum.
Many teenagers will choose to use alternative modes of cover, such as restricted hours car insurance, to get a more competitive quote
