Cheap car insurance can be hard to find for young drivers. And the reason is clear, according to a study just published - teenagers aged 18 crash 50 times a day, compared to those aged in their 40s who are almost three times less likely to be in a collision.
As a result, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is making demands for learner drivers to spend at least one year learning to drive, rather than pass driving tests more quickly.
In addition, the study highlights that those reaching voting age who have been driving for a year have double the chance of claiming on car insurance policies as the average 30-year-old with the same level of driving experience.
With young people running such a high risk of being part of a major road traffic accident, the ABI also wants newly qualified drivers to be banned by law from carrying too many passengers.
Actually placing limits on passenger numbers in cars driven by young motorists can reduce accident rates by more than a third, according to US research.
One of the ABI's directors, Nick Starling, said, "This is why we want to see drivers under 20 in the UK able to carry no more than one teenage passenger for six months after passing their test."
He said such a move would ensure safer motoring for young drivers and is pressing the Government to act on the study's findings to ensure young drivers, their friend and families are safer on the road.
