Insurance for small cars is cheaper and wiser
New research from Gocompare.com has revealed that despite large young driver insurance premiums associated with powerful engines, 17-21 year-olds are still choosing inappropriately powerful cars.
The report also reveals that comparison websites for cheap car insurance quotes are used most frequently by young drivers from the 17-21 year-old age group, but 63 per cent of them are obtaining quotes for cars with engines over 1250cc.
Over two thirds of male young drivers choose a car with an engine larger than 1250cc, whereas, a little over half of the females in this age group drive larger-engined cars.
Young male drivers are also more than twice as likely as female car drivers to seek a quote for a modified car.
Hayley Parsons, chief executive of Gocompare.com, said, "While young drivers are savvy about using comparison sites to get a better deal on their insurance, the majority still haven't got the message that 'small is beautiful' when it comes to choosing a car."
To avoid expensive young driver insurance costs Gocompare.com recommends driving an unmodified car with an engine smaller than 1250cc, taking a Pass Plus course of driving lessons and shopping around for your cheap car insurance.
