IAM promises car insurance savings for young drivers

A British motoring charity has suggested that compulsory post-test training could solve the problem of high accident rates and soaring young driver car insurance premiums.

Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Motorists say that the introduction of a similar scheme in Austria has lead to a 30% drop in young driver deaths, and with it a nationwide reduction in the price of car insurance for young drivers.

Optional post-test training - including the IAM's own Advanced Driver Test - is readily available in the UK, but the promise of greater confidence and a cheap car insurance premium is not enough to tempt many of today's newly-qualified drivers back to school.

According to IAM chief executive Simon Best, more needs to be done to ensure newly-qualified drivers continue to improve their skills.

"The high numbers of young drivers who continue to be killed or seriously injured graphically highlights the need for legislation that insists on post-test training," he said.

In a forthcoming letter to the Under Secretary of State for Transport, the IAM will recommend that a course of post-test training be made compulsory for all new drivers within a year of their pass date.

However, it seems more likely that MPs will seek a solution to the present high rate of accidents and young driver car insurance premiums through revisions to the driving test itself.
