Office expected to pay penalty for years
The recent driving ban of a high-ranking Yorkshire police officer for speeding at 90 mph in a 60 mph zone has brought the effect of speeding on a person's eligibility for cheap car insurance into the media spotlight.
Although the policeman's ban comes with a £300 fine and will last for only 42 days, long-term it will certainly make him a less attractive proposition to motor insurance companies.
Moneyexpert.com responded to the news by reminding readers that speeding has a much less negative impact on a person's chances of receiving cheap car insurance than other offences such as drink-driving. It added that convictions for drug-driving especially damage a person's options in the motor insurance market.
Even though the online comparison site emphasised that speeding was not as much of a cheap car insurance hazard as other offences, it made clear the financial reality of even the most minor speeding conviction, saying that these offences are often met with an average premium rise of around £25. They added that such premium hikes would usually take around five years to expire.
